Greeting and reply come in pairs
Many Arabic greetings have a fixed reply. السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم (peace be upon you) is answered with وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلام (and upon you peace). صَباحُ الخَيْر (good morning) is answered with صَباحُ النّور (morning of light).
Everyday courtesy
مَرْحَبًا is a neutral hello. شُكْرًا (thank you) is answered with عَفْوًا (you're welcome). مَعَ السَّلامة means goodbye.
